So many sentences of In Love by Alfred Hayes had me by the short and curlies. We must behave, he says, as though there is a destination, meanwhile we ask ourselves what we really want, why we impress everyone as altogether sad, though we're not, yet when I look into the mirror, it turns out to be something really true, my face is sad, my face is actually sad.
